Ucluelet and Surrounding Area History

Our History

The Ucluelet and Area Historical Society was founded on July 21, 1988.

The original chartered members were Rose Davison, Carol Thompson, Jack Biggin-Pound, Margaret Thompson and Patricia Hutchinson.

The roots of the Society go further back. In the late 1970s there was concern about preserving local history. One of the key figures in planting the seeds for the society was Mary Kimoto, who is still on the UAHS Board of Directors today. Now aged 99, she is our matriarch and our inspiration.

Our Purpose

The Ucluelet and Area Historical Society exists to gather and preserve artefacts and archival information of educational, historical and cultural value associated with the area.

Our ongoing purpose is to establish and maintain an archives and a museum for the purpose of preserving, recording and exhibiting for public enjoyment the material we curate.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

To preserve the history of our area, present it to the community and to visitors, and thereby to increase knowledge and build pride in our area’s colourful background.

OUR COLLECTIONS

Our archives contain images, paper records, recordings, maps etc. Access is available to the public by appointment: info@ucluelethistory.ca   We also have a collection of artefacts from our local area.

Fundraising Events

Our main fundraiser, the Mothers’ Day Plant Sale, supports our program of summer exhibitions and displays such as the photo exhibit of military history at the ANAF Remembrance Day ceremony.

Exhibits

The Society provides a range of travelling exhibits for local events and static displays for local businesses. Contact us at: info@ucluelethistory.ca  if interested in an historical display inside your business.

Our Board Members

The Society has a limited membership of eight people who are also the directors, and who vote on officers. When a vacancy opens, community members with an interest in local history, and background in community board work are sought. Nominations are invited at an AGM or Special General Meeting, and a vote then takes place.

The directors of the Ucluelet & Area Historical Society hold a business meeting every second Monday of the month at 5:00 PM at the Ucluelet Community Centre, except in July and August. The public is welcome to attend these business meetings, but are advised to check the meeting is going ahead beforehand. During Pandemic, meetings are held virtually on ZOOM.
