The Pacific Ocean around Ucluelet was known as the Graveyard of the Pacific due to the high number of shipwrecks along the coast.

The first Amphitrite Lighthouse was built at the point after the Pass of Melfort sank with all aboard.

The unusual design of the second Amphitrite Lighthouse reflects the need for it to cling to the solid rock through violent pacific storms that pound the coastline.  Some people think it resembles a barnacle!

There has been a lighthouse at Amphitrite Point for over a century.  The current lighthouse recently underwent a bit of a makeover with materials and volunteer labour supplied by the local Ucluelet Coop store.

If you have a story to share about Amphitrite Point and any of the lighthouses that have protected the coast over the years, please contact the Historical Society.
